🤔️小作业:
1. What is the likely reason the museum mentioned the 2011 Peanut Butter Platform incident?
A. To criticize abstract artists whose work invites accidents
B. To highlight that artwork damage by visitors has precedent
C. To show that Rothko's work is more valuable than others
D. To imply children are not the only ones who cause damage
无注释原文:
Child damages €50m Rothko in 'unguarded moment' at museum
From: The Times
A child has damaged a Rothko painting worth up to €50 million during an “unguarded moment” at a Dutch museum.
Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8, a huge abstract piece created by the modern artist Mark Rothko in 1960, will require professional restoration after being scratched by a child when no one was watching at the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam.
The museum said: “Rothko's work has sustained damage: a number of visible scratches in the unvarnished paint layer. It was caused by a child who scratched the underside of the work in an unguarded moment.”
Despite the painting being one of the museum's most popular and valuable works of art, the child escaped the attention of gallery staff to cause the damage, which has yet to be fully assessed.
The museum added: “We are currently investigating, in collaboration with experts, what the next steps for treatment are. We expect that the work can be shown again in the future.”
The institution knows the identity of the child and the parents but has not made this public. There is now a question of how much the restoration will cost and who will pay for it. While the museum does not want to make any statements about the bill, it is generally the rule that costs are recovered from visitors who cause damage.
In 2011 the museum had problems with a 4-14m installation called Peanut Butter Platform by Wim T Schippers. Unsuspecting visitors stepped in the thick layer of peanut butter smeared on the gallery floor at least three times. They were given a clean-up bill.
The damaged Rothko was bought by the museum in 1970, the year the artist died in New York, and was one of his large abstract paintings with three “floating colour fields”. In 2022 the Dutch art collector Bert Kreuk estimated the painting could fetch between €40 million and €50 million.
In 2012 a man defaced a multimillion-pound Rothko mural by writing on it while it hung in the Tate Modern in front of horrified onlookers.
It has been a bad week for modern art in the Netherlands after it emerged that a town hall had thrown away a pop art silkscreen by Andy Warhol during renovation work.
