Chinese Bubble Tea Chain Auntea Jenny's Shares Jump on Hong Kong Debut
From: Dow Jones Newswires
Chinese bubble tea chain Auntea Jenny (Shanghai) Industrial's shares surged on their trading debut in Hong Kong, the latest in a string of offerings from tea sellers.
Shares surged 56% in early trade Thursday to 176.90 Hong Kong dollars. The benchmark Hang Seng Index was 0.8% higher.
Auntea Jenny raised HK$195 million, equivalent to $25.1 million, in net proceeds, which it plans to use on enhancing its digitalization and supply chain capabilities, as well as strengthening research and development, it said in its IPO filing. The company also plans to expand overseas, with Southeast Asian countries as its first choice, as well as North America.
As of the end of 2024, Auntea Jenny had 9,176 stores, almost double from two years ago. The brand mostly sells milk tea with grain toppings and fresh fruit tea priced around $2, targeting consumers in smaller cities, with half of its stores located in China's third- or lower-tier cities.
The tea chain's 2024 revenue dropped 1.9% from the previous year to 3.28 billion yuan, or $ 454 million, while its profit declined 15% to 328.9 million yuan, which it attributed to an overall industry slowdown and intensified competition in China's tea shop industry in 2024.
China's bubble tea market is increasingly crowded and competitive after decades of growth.
Auntea Jenny joins a wave of Chinese bubble tea makers going public this year as they tap capital markets for further expansion. Mixue Group, known for its ice cream and sugary drinks priced under $1, raised $423 million in its IPO in March. Another Chinese tea brand Chagee listed on the Nasdaq last month, raising $411 million.
The size of the global freshly-made beverage market could rise to $1.10 billion in 2028, accounting for nearly half of the global beverage market, First Shanghai Securities analysts said in a research note.
Annual sales in China and Southeast Asia are expected to hit 51 and 36 cups per person, respectively, by 2028, the analysts added. That's more than double 2023 sales.
The listing also comes as IPO activity in Hong Kong heats up. Funds raised from 17 new listings in the city during the first quarter nearly quadrupled to HK$18.7 billion compared with a year earlier.
