'King of Clay' Rafael Nadal receives emotional Roland-Garros send-off from Murray, Federer and Djokovic

From: Olympics.com

After his retirement last November, the 14-time French Open champion said farewell to a packed Court Philippe-Chatrier on the first day of the 2025 tournament. And his three biggest rivals were there to share the moment with him.

There was barely a dry eye in the house as Roland-Garros paid tribute to its greatest champion, Rafael Nadal, at the 2025 French Open on Sunday (25 May).

Near the end of the farewell ceremony, Nadal's three greatest rivals - Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic - joined him on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

"For me, it means a lot that all of you are here," Nadal told the trio. "Tennis is just a game. Sometimes we feel a little bit more but I think we understand at the end of the day that it's really only a game. That all of you are here is everything. That's a great message to the world that we can be good friends even if we had the best rivalries."

The ceremony concluded with French Tennis Federation president Gilles Moretton, accompanied by French Open director Amelie Mauresmo, unveiling a metal plate to the side of the net bearing Nadal's footprint, his name, the number 14, and the French Open trophy.

Four-time women's champion Iga Swiatek and four-time Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz were among the thousands in the stands wearing special commemorative burgundy 'Merci Rafa' T-shirts.

Emotions were high from the start as Nadal received a 90-second standing ovation as he walked to a lectern. A video montage of his Paris heroics, ending with the message 'Merci Rafa', was played on the big screen. The crowd cheered and chanted "Rafa" repeatedly with the 38-year-old Spaniard wiping away tears before speaking in French, English and Spanish.

After thanking the Roland-Garros team for "giving me the opportunity to have this farewell from, without a doubt, the most important tennis court of my career", Nadal reflected on his history at Roland-Garros which began in 2004 when he could only watch from the stands due to a foot injury.

"I dreamed of coming back the following year to compete," he said. "In 2005, I was finally able to play here for the first time. I was 18 years old and my first major experience was the match that I played against my childhood friend and rival Richard Gasquet.

"From that day on, I fully understood what Roland-Garros meant. I experienced everything over these 20 years. I've had incredible rivals, like Andy, Novak and, of course, Roger. And, of course, many others who pushed me to my physical and mental limits. Truly, nothing would have been as thrilling without the long-lasting rivalries that have driven all of us to improve every single day.
