Title: _____

From: Inside Story

While safety improvements might have been made to your street in recent years, many transport studies also show declines in pedestrian mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there's too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school in the morning. Many parents of small children will bundle them into the car instead — much safer.

Dutch authors Thalia Verkade and Marco te Brömmelstroet are bothered by facts like these. In their new book Movement: How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives they call for a radical rethink of our streets and the role they play in our lives.

Life on city streets started to change decades ago. Whole neighbourhoods were demolished to make way for new road networks. Kids learned to play elsewhere. Some communities fought back. Most famously, a Canadian journalist who had moved her family to Manhattan in the early 1950s led a campaign to stop the demolition of her local park. Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with a sunken expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.” Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well.

Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly. In Australia we now have over twenty million cars for just over twenty-six million people, among the highest rate of car ownership in the world.

We invest a lot in roads that help us rush through, but we fail to account for the true costs. Do we really recognise what it costs us as a society when children can't move safely around our communities? The authors of Movement have it right: it's time to think differently about that street outside your front door. Hey, you might even like to stop and linger awhile.

Why the rush?

From: Inside Story, 21 January 2023

While safety improvements might have been made to your street in recent years, many transport studies also show declines in pedestrian mobility, especially among young children. Many parents say there's too much traffic on the roads for their children to walk safely to school in the morning. Many parents of small children will bundle them into the car instead — much safer.

pedestrian

pedestrian /pəˈdes.tri.ən/ 表示“行人,步行者”,英文解释为“a person who is walking, especially in an area where vehicles go”举个🌰:A few pedestrians sheltered from the rain in doorways.

mobility

mobility /məʊˈbɪl.ə.ti/ 表示“活动性;流动性”,英文解释为“the ability to move freely or be easily moved”举个🌰:Some neck injuries cause total loss of mobility below the point of injury.

bundle

bundle /ˈbʌn.dəl/ 表示“推搡;匆匆送走;乱堆;乱塞”,英文解释为“to push or put someone or something somewhere quickly and roughly”举个🌰:He bundled his clothes into the washing machine.

Dutch authors Thalia Verkade and Marco te Brömmelstroet are bothered by facts like these. In their new book Movement: How to Take Back Our Streets and Transform Our Lives they call for a radical rethink of our streets and the role they play in our lives.

radical

1)表示“激进的;过激的;极端的”,英文解释为“believing or expressing the belief that there should be great or extreme social or political change”举个🌰:He was known as a radical thinker.

2)表示“根本的;彻底的,完全的”,英文解释为“relating to the most important parts of something or someone; complete or extreme”举个🌰:We need to make some radical changes to our operating procedures.

Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with a sunken expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.” Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well.

demolish

demolish /dɪˈmɒl.ɪʃ/ 表示“(尤指为利用土地而)拆除,拆毁”,英文解释为“to completely destroy a building, especially in order to use the land for something else”举个🌰:A number of houses were demolished so that the supermarket could be built.

sunken

sunken /ˈsʌŋ.kən/ 1)表示“沉没的,沉入海底的”,英文解释为“having fallen to the bottom of the sea”举个🌰:They're diving for sunken treasure.

2)表示“低洼的,下陷的”,英文解释为“at a lower level than the surrounding area”举个🌰:It was a luxurious bathroom, with a sunken bath.

expressway

expressway /ɪkˈspres.weɪ/ 表示“快速干道;高速公路”,英文解释为“a wide road for fast-moving traffic, especially one in the US that goes through a city, with a limited number of places at which drivers can enter and leave it”

区分:

📍highway /ˈhaɪ.weɪ/ 表示“公路(尤指连接城镇的重要公路)”,英文解释为“a public road, especially an important road that joins cities or towns together”如:a coastal/interstate highway 滨海/州际公路。

📍freeway /ˈfriː.weɪ/ 表示“高速公路”,英文解释为“a wide road for fast-moving traffic, especially in the US, with a limited number of places at which drivers can enter and leave it”

Hey, you might even like to stop and linger awhile.

linger

1)表示“(想法、感觉、疾病)继续存留,逗留;徘徊”,英文解释为“When something such as an idea, feeling, or illness lingers, it continues to exist for a long time, often much longer than expected.”举个🌰:The scent of her perfume lingered on in the room.

2)表示“继续逗留”,英文解释为“If you linger somewhere, you stay there for a longer time than is necessary, for example, because you are enjoying yourself.”举个🌰:Customers are welcome to linger over coffee until around midnight.

For as long as fears of viral contagion linger, many businesses could struggle to attract new custom,

awhile

awhile /əˈwaɪl/ 表示“片刻;暂时”,英文解释为“for a short time”举个🌰:Stay awhile and rest.
