A master's graduate surnamed Yang in Zhengzhou, Henan province has taken social media by storm with his artistic take on shaobing (Chinese flatbread), amassing over 400,000 followers within just two months.

Yang, a young postgraduate from North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power, started a shaobing business after quitting his previous job. Using just a utility knife, he sculpts the dough into elaborate shapes ranging from firearms like Desert Eagles to popular cartoon characters such as Labubu and Hello Kitty.

His stall has become particularly popular among children, who jokingly refer to it as a "flour arsenal". Daily queues form as soon as he opens for business, with some elderly customers reportedly waiting up to two hours to buy his creations for their grandchildren.

What began as a custom request from a child has blossomed into a viral phenomenon, with each piece meticulously hand-carved using only a utility knife — a skill he attributes to the spatial imagination honed during his engineering studies.

Remarkably, Yang prices each artistic flatbread at just 1 yuan ($0.14), despite their intricate designs. "I initially sold them for 3 to 5 yuan but lowered the price to make them affordable for children," he explained.

His Douyin bio — "Unemployed civil engineering grad selling shaobing" — underscores the unconventional career pivot that has sparked heated debate online.

While many applaud his creativity and defiance of "elite job" stereotypes, critics question whether street vending justifies his education. Undeterred, Yang sees his venture as liberation. "Traditional civil engineering didn’t suit me," he shared, adding that livestreaming and content creation now fuel his entrepreneurial ambitions. His story resonates with a growing cohort of Chinese youth redefining success beyond conventional career tracks.
