Excited for cosy season? Turns out binge-watching your favourite TV shows could actually be good for you

From: STYLIST

A study has found that binge-watching our favourite shows might provide us with a whole array of benefits. Here's why.

If you're anything like us, you're getting well and truly into the routine of settling in for cosy season. As the days get shorter and the weather starts to cool, all we want to do is curl up on the sofa with a chai latte in hand, watching re-reruns of our favourite shows (Gilmore Girls, anyone?) or getting stuck into a great book.

But let's face it: sometimes a little guilt goes hand-in-hand with watching hours of TV at a time. When Netflix pops up with the 'Still watching?' prompt, it's hard not to feel just a little bit judged. But, the great news is you can set that feeling aside – a recent study has found that binge-watching could even be good for us.

The research, which was first published in the academic journal Acta Psychologica, spoke to over 300 undergraduate students and asked them to identify three memorable stories they had experienced as TV shows, films or books – and specifically asked them about whether they thought about these storylines long after they'd finished watching or reading.

It found that when participants had 'binge-watched' a show (which was classed as watching three episodes or more in one sitting), they were more likely to have 'retrospective imaginative involvement' – meaning they were more likely to remember what they had watched and connect with it. The study also surmised that binge-watching might allow audiences to develop richer ideas about characters and worlds, allowing them to think more deeply about what they had seen or or revisit it later to relieve stress and improve wellbeing.

While the research did acknowledge that there are limited studies on the positive effects of binge-watching on mental health, its initial research shows that sitting down for a marathon streaming session could be good for our mental health, allowing us to escape to different worlds and think more deeply about our connection to certain situations and characters.

So, next time you're feeling guilty about a day spent on the sofa, push through that feeling and press 'next episode'. You deserve it.

Excited for cosy season? Turns out binge-watching your favourite TV shows could actually be good for you

From: STYLIST

A study has found that binge-watching our favourite shows might provide us with a whole array of benefits. Here's why.

binge

binge /bɪndʒ/可以作动词,也可以作名词,表示“(尤指在饮食和花钱方面)无节制的狂热行为,狂欢,放纵,狂闹”,英文解释为“If you binge, you do too much of something, such as drinking alcohol, eating, or spending money.”如:a drinking/eating/spending binge 狂饮/暴食/滥花钱,举个🌰:He went on a five day drinking binge.

📍binge drinking可以指“暴饮(酒),酗酒”(the activity of drinking too much alcohol on one occasion)。

📍binge watching可以理解为“无节制地狂看某部电视连续剧”或者说“追剧,刷剧”;binge-watch作动词,举个🌰:We binge-watched an entire season of Breaking Bad on Sunday.

Investors lap it up as hungrily as Netflix binge-watchers, who now number 193m worldwide.

array

array /əˈreɪ/ 表示“(尤指非常有吸引力、令人赞赏并常以特定的方式排列的)一系列,一批,大量,大群”,英文解释为“a large group of things or people, especially one that is attractive or causes admiration or has been positioned in a particular way”举个🌰:There was a splendid array of food on the table.

If you're anything like us, you're getting well and truly into the routine of settling in for cosy season. As the days get shorter and the weather starts to cool, all we want to do is curl up on the sofa with a chai latte in hand, watching re-reruns of our favourite shows (Gilmore Girls, anyone?) or getting stuck into a great book.

cosy

英式 cosy 美式 cozy /ˈkəʊ.zi/ 表示“(尤指建筑物因为小及温暖而)温馨的,温暖舒适的,惬意的,安逸的”,英文解释为“comfortable and pleasant, especially (of a building) because of being small and warm”举个🌰:This room is nice and cosy in the winter.

作名词,表示“保暖罩”,英文解释为“a cover that you put on a teapot or a boiled egg to keep it warm”

curl up

curl /kɜːl/ up表示“蜷缩;蜷坐;蜷卧”,英文解释为“to sit or lie in a position with your arms and legs close to your body”举个🌰:She curled up on the sofa to watch TV.

chai latte

But let's face it: sometimes a little guilt goes hand-in-hand with watching hours of TV at a time. When Netflix pops up with the 'Still watching?' prompt, it's hard not to feel just a little bit judged. But, the great news is you can set that feeling aside – a recent study has found that binge-watching could even be good for us.

prompt

prompt /prɒmpt/ 作名词,1)表示“(计算机屏幕上的)提示符(显示计算机已经准备好接受指令)”,英文解释为“a sign on a computer screen that shows that the computer is ready to receive your instructions”

2)表示“(给演员的)提词,提白”,英文解释为“words that are spoken to an actor who has forgotten what he or she is going to say during the performance of a play”

3)作动词,表示“促使;导致;激起”,英文解释为“to make sb decide to do sth; to cause sth to happen”举个🌰:His speech prompted an angry outburst from a man in the crowd.

One cannot but wonder what would prompt such an act

4)作动词,表示“(尤指)给(演员)提词”,英文解释为“to help someone, especially an actor, to remember what they were going to say or do”举个🌰:I forgot my line and had to be prompted.

The study also surmised that binge-watching might allow audiences to develop richer ideas about characters and worlds, allowing them to think more deeply about what they had seen or or revisit it later to relieve stress and improve wellbeing.

episode

在电视/电影节目中,episode /ˈep.ɪ.səʊd/ 表示“一集,一节,片断”(one of the single parts into which a story is divided, especially when it is broadcast on the television or radio),也可以指“事件;(相关的)一连串事件;一段经历”,英文解释为“a single event or group of related events”举个🌰:This latest episode in the fraud scandal has shocked a lot of people. 还可以指「疾病的发作,发病」,英文解释为:a finite period in which someone is affected by a specified illness.

最后一集 finale:the last part of a piece of music or of a show, event etc (演出的)终场,最后一幕;(音乐的)终曲;(事件等的)结尾。

Image

retrospective

1)作形容词,表示“涉及以往的;追溯的;回顾的”,英文解释为“relating to or thinking about the past”举个🌰:The new rule will be applied retrospectively.(副词) 新的规定将具有追溯效力。

2)作名词,表示“(艺术家作品)回顾展”(a public exhibition of the work that an artist has done in the past, showing how his or her work has developed)

A retrospective at this point would be a real feather in my cap,

Image

📍 a feather in one's cap,字面意思“帽子上的一根羽毛”,表示“可引以为豪的成就;可夸耀的事,值得骄傲的事”(an achievement to be proud of)举个🌰:It's a real feather in our cap to be playing in the state championship.

Image

surmise

surmise /səːˈmaɪz/ 表示“推测,猜测,臆测”,英文解释为“to guess something, without having much or any proof”举个🌰:The police surmise (that) the robbers have fled the country.

What else can you surmise, Mr. Bond?

Image

While the research did acknowledge that there are limited studies on the positive effects of binge-watching on mental health, its initial research shows that sitting down for a marathon streaming session could be good for our mental health, allowing us to escape to different worlds and think more deeply about our connection to certain situations and characters.

So, next time you're feeling guilty about a day spent on the sofa, push through that feeling and press 'next episode'. You deserve it.
