Dictionary.com Reveals the 2025 Word of the Year — and It's Not Really a Word?
From: PEOPLE
Dictionary.com has revealed its word — or rather, numbers — of the year for 2025.
The website announced on Tuesday, Oct. 28, that its official Word of the Year is 6-7, a word derived from the song "Doot Doot (6 7)" by Skrilla that features the recurring lyric, “6-7.”
“If you're the parent of a school-aged child, you might be feeling a familiar vexation at the sight of these two formerly innocuous numerals,” they said.
“If you're a member of Gen Alpha, however, maybe you're smirking at the thought of adults once again struggling to make sense of your notoriously slippery slang," the website added.
According to Dictionary.com, 6-7 “is a viral, ambiguous slang term” that is “largely nonsensical.” The website suggests that “some argue it means 'so-so,' or 'maybe this, maybe that,' especially when paired with a hand gesture where both palms face up and move alternately up and down.”
Others use 6-7 “as a way to respond to questions or as a result of seeing the numbers '67' in consecutive order in the wild, such as on a math problem or within a phone number," the website said.
They added, “Because of its murky and shifting usage, it's an example of brainrot slang and is intended to be nonsensical and playfully absurd.”
Searches for 6-7 rose in a “dramatic” fashion in the summer of 2025, increasing more than sixfold since June, according to Dictionary.com's announcement. At this point, “the surge shows no signs of stopping.”
To select the Word of the Year, Dictionary.com's lexicographers analyzed various data points — including social media trends, search engine results and more — “to identify words that made an impact on our conversations, online and in the real world.”
“The Word of the Year isn't just about popular usage; it reveals the stories we tell about ourselves and how we've changed over the year,” Dictionary.com said.
Though seemingly “impossible to define,” the website said 6-7 “shows the speed at which a new word can rocket around the world as a rising generation enters the global conversation.”
“It's meaningless, ubiquitous, and nonsensical. In other words, it has all the hallmarks of brainrot,” they said. Still, they added, “it remains meaningful to the people who use it because of the connection it fosters."
