In Akita, local authorities requested formal military assistance from Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, saying their existing measures – including box traps and bear repellent sprays – weren’t enough.
Following a series of recent bear encounters and injuries across Japan, the Chinese Embassy in Japan issued a safety advisory on Thursday, urging Chinese citizens in the country to stay vigilant and prioritize personal safety.
Travelers are advised to check official wildlife alerts before engaging in outdoor activities and avoid remote forested or mountainous areas, particularly during dawn and dusk. When outdoors, moving in groups and carrying protective items like bear spray is recommended. In case of an encounter, remain calm, face the bear, and back away slowly without running. The public is reminded to stay informed and prioritize personal safety.
