Coca-Cola Names Next CEO

From: The Wall Street Journal

Coca-Cola said its Chief Executive James Quincey will step down from his role in March and be succeeded by Henrique Braun, the company's chief operating officer.

Quincey, 60 years old, became CEO of the beverage company in 2017 and chairman in 2019. During his tenure at the helm of the Coca-Cola maker, the company added more than 10 billion-dollar, brands including milk brand Fairlife and Topo Chico, Coca-Cola said Wednesday.

In the transition, Quincey will become executive chairman. The board plans to nominate Braun, 57, to stand for election as a director at the company's annual shareholders meeting next year.

The outgoing and incoming chief executives both forged similar paths at the soda giant. Both Braun and Quincey joined the company in 1996 in Atlanta. They each held chief operating officer roles before taking the helm at Coke.

Several Wall Street analysts showed little surprise by the pick of Braun as CEO, and saw him as a natural successor. Braun spoke on the company's latest earnings call in October and at industry conferences in recent years. Braun had an important role in Coke's refranchising efforts and has been working closely with Quincey for the past few years, Citi analysts say.

Shares in Coca-Cola, which has a market value of over $300 billion, were flat in after-hours trading. Coca-Cola's stock is up around 12% over the past year. The S&P 500 is up around 14% over the same time frame.

Over his roughly three decades at the company, Braun worked in roles in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. He was named operating chief in January and served as the president of international development from 2022 through 2024.

Coca-Cola said Braun will aim to build on the foundation left by Quincey, who helped steer the company after completing the transfer of its U.S. bottling operations to independent partners. He also managed the company through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, he helped navigate the company through a dip in sales to Hispanic consumers—an important market for Coke—after a social media rumor spread that it had called on U.S. immigration authorities to remove undocumented workers. Coke has since seen its sales rebound among Hispanic consumers.

For the three months ended Sept. 26, Coke said its revenue rose 5% from a year earlier to $12.46 billion. Global volumes of soda were flat year on year, while its water, coffee, tea and sports drinks businesses grew 3%.

To reach cost-constrained buyers, Coke began offering new package sizes for consumers looking for lower prices.

“When we look from a consumer point of view, we continue to see divergency in spending between the income groups,” Braun told analysts in October about the company's North American business. “The pressure on middle and low-end income consumers is still there.”
