“晒妻子生产过程”引众怒,千万粉丝博主被禁言
The renowned Chinese social media influencer "Paul in America", who boasts over 10 million followers, has been suspended from a major platform for violating community guidelines, following widespread criticism over his graphic documentation of his wife's childbirth.
His account page now displays a notice citing violations of "relevant laws, regulations, and platform policies".
The controversy began in early February when Paul, a US-based former Microsoft product manager known for his viral Northeastern Chinese dialect videos, posted footage of his wife's 23-hour labor. In the video, he detailed her third-degree tear, postpartum hemorrhage, and the loss of 3,344 milliliters of blood — requiring emergency surgery and transfusion. Both mother and child survived.
Paul filmed extensively throughout the process, including moments when his wife was exposed and during critical bleeding episodes. Critics accused him of exploiting private family moments, prioritizing content over compassion, and disregarding his wife's distress for online attention.
The contested video has since been removed.
Legal experts weighed in on the case. Pang Jiulin, a partner at Beijing Chunlin Law Firm, noted that although sensitive areas were pixelated, broadcasting the mother's suffering to millions still raises serious concerns over portrait rights and privacy. "Her consent, given while in critical condition with massive blood loss, is questionable in terms of clarity and voluntariness — it may constitute invalid consent," Pang told China Youth Daily.
Some defended Paul, arguing the video helped raise public awareness of childbirth risks. But media commentators pushed back, saying such intentions do not justify invasive exposure. "True empathy means asking whether she would want to be seen this way — not speaking for her," read one editorial. It suggested alternative educational formats, such as doctor interviews or anonymized case studies, to responsibly inform the public.
