China shows off kung fu robots in new year celebrations

From: The Times

Last year the break-out hit from Chinese television's New Year's Eve gala was a troupe of dancing robots.

The country's modern success has been built on the advantages of scale, so it was hardly surprising that this year robots were not an incidental feature but took over the whole show.

They danced, they did a comedy sketch about grandmother-like behaviour, they did kung fu, and they did the thing most human artistes fear most — performed with children.

Nor was their appearance just for fun. The importance of the gala, annually the most-watched show in the world, is such that the companies behind the robots paid tens of millions of yuan for the chance to show off their wares.

“Chunwan”, as the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala is informally known, was an invention of state television only as far back as 1983. Since then, it has gone from being a cheesy light entertainment show to being a major showcase for the culture of the People's Republic.

Approved foreign performers are now also invited: Monday night's show featured John Legend, Westlife and Lionel Richie.

However, it was well advertised in advance that after the success of last year's troupe of robots, who performed a traditional dance with live humans, this year's would be robot-focused.

Unitree, the company that produced 2025's dancers, received worldwide publicity. This year, Unitree was joined by three other firms — MagicLab, Galbot and Noetix, who each paid an estimated £6 million for a slot.

However, it was still Unitree that provided the stand-out performance, a complex martial arts routine in which the robots performance was cheered on by yellow-clad “kung fu kids” who then joined in. The robots were clearly far more confident than 2025's rather wooden stars — they span, high-kicked, twirled nunchuks and even back-flipped.

Official figures showed that the show was watched live by 677 million people, with more than 13 billion individual hits on social media. The shopping website JD.com reported that searches for robots online surged by 300 per cent in the two hours after the show.

China shows off kung fu robots in new year celebrations

From: The Times

Last year the break-out hit from Chinese television's New Year's Eve gala was a troupe of dancing robots.

gala

gala /ˈɡɑː.lə/ 表示“节日盛会;演出”,英文解释为“A gala is a special public celebration, entertainment, performance, or festival.”如:a gala evening at the Metropolitan Opera House 大都会歌剧院的庆祝晚会,Spring Festival Gala即“春节联欢晚会”。

troupe

troupe /truːp/ 表示“(演员、歌手等的)班子,表演团,剧团”,英文解释为“a group of actors, singers, etc. who work together”举个🌰:She joined a dance troupe and travelled all over the world.

The country's modern success has been built on the advantages of scale, so it was hardly surprising that this year robots were not an incidental feature but took over the whole show.

scale

scale /skeɪl/ 1)表示“标度,刻度;等级”,英文解释为“a set of numbers, amounts, etc., used to measure or compare the level of something”如:the Centigrade/Fahrenheit scale 摄氏/华氏温标。

2)表示“比例;比例尺”,英文解释为“the relation between the real size of something and its size on a map, model, or diagram”如:a scale of 1:10,000 比例尺为1:10000。

3)表示“大小;规模;范围”,英文解释为“the size or level of something, especially when this is large”举个🌰:We don't yet know the scale of the problem.

作动词,scale /skeɪl/ 表示“爬越;攀登”,英文解释为“to climb up a steep surface, such as a wall or the side of a mountain, often using special equipment”举个🌰:The prisoner scaled the high prison wall and ran off.

scale sth up表示“增加,增大”,英文解释为“to increase the size, amount, or importance of something, usually an organization or process”举个🌰:My company is scaling up its operations in Western Asia.

They danced, they did a comedy sketch about grandmother-like behaviour, they did kung fu, and they did the thing most human artistes fear most — performed with children.

sketch

sketch /sketʃ/ 1)表示“草图,速写;素描”,英文解释为“a simple, quickly-made drawing that does not have many details”举个🌰:My mother made a (pencil) sketch of my brother reading a book.

2)表示“短文;短剧”,英文解释为“a short written or spoken story that does not have many details”

3)表示“幽默短剧,滑稽小品”,英文解释为“a short, humorous part of a longer show on stage, television, or radio”举个🌰:I thought the sketch about celebrity chefs was really funny.

artiste

artiste /ɑːˈtiːst/ 表示“专业演员,艺人(尤指舞蹈演员 、歌手或演员)”,英文解释为“a skilled performer, especially a dancer, singer, or actor”如:a popular 19th-century music hall artiste 一位19世纪广受欢迎的综艺表演艺人,circus artistes 马戏团表演艺人。

Nor was their appearance just for fun. The importance of the gala, annually the most-watched show in the world, is such that the companies behind the robots paid tens of millions of yuan for the chance to show off their wares.

wares

wares /wɛəz/ 复数形式,表示“ (尤指小商贩在大街上或市场里出售的)物品,商品;公司的产品”,英文解释为“things that sb is selling, especially in the street or at a market”举个🌰:He travelled from town to town selling his wares.

“Chunwan”, as the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala is informally known, was an invention of state television only as far back as 1983. Since then, it has gone from being a cheesy light entertainment show to being a major showcase for the culture of the People's Republic.

cheesy

cheesy /ˈtʃiː.zi/ 1)表示“劣质的,低级的;粗鄙的;庸俗的”,英文解释为“of bad quality or in bad taste”如:cheesy hotel music 庸俗的酒店音乐,cheesy adverts 粗俗的广告。

2)表示“(笑容)虚假的,做作的”,英文解释为“A cheesy smile is wide but not sincere.”举个🌰:She gave a cheesy grin to the cameras.

light entertainment

表示“轻松的、消遣性的娱乐”(television shows, plays, films, etc. that can be enjoyed without a lot of mental effort)。

The robots were clearly far more confident than 2025's rather wooden stars — they span, high-kicked, twirled nunchuks and even back-flipped.

clad

的”,英文解释为“(of people) dressed, or (of things) covered”举个🌰:A strange figure appeared in the doorway, clad in white.

wooden

wooden /ˈwʊd.ən/ 1)表示“木制的”,英文解释为“made of wood”举个🌰:The house was surrounded by a tall, wooden fence.

2)表示“(行为)僵硬的,呆板的”,英文解释为“used to describe behaviour that is awkward or shows little expression”举个🌰:She gave a wooden smile to the camera.

Official figures showed that the show was watched live by 677 million people, with more than 13 billion individual hits on social media. The shopping website JD.com reported that searches for robots online surged by 300 per cent in the two hours after the show.

surge

surge /sɜːdʒ/ 1)作动词,表示“急剧上升;飞涨;剧增”,英文解释为“If something surges, it increases suddenly and greatly, after being steady or developing only slowly.”举个🌰:The company's profits have surged.

2)表示“涌动,蜂拥向前”,英文解释为“to move quickly and powerfully”举个🌰:An angry crowd surged through the gates of the president's palace.

3)作名词,表示“剧增”,英文解释为“A surge is a sudden large increase in something that has previously been steady, or has only increased or developed slowly.”举个🌰:An unexpected surge in electrical power caused the computer to crash.

But she will not survive the amount of energy surging within her.
