4 Science-Backed Benefits of Coriander

From: Verywell Health

Coriander, a member of the carrot family, is used worldwide as both a spice and a traditional remedy. In the United States, coriander typically refers to the seeds, which are valued for their potential health benefits, while the leaves are commonly known as cilantro.

1. Antioxidant Benefits

Coriander contains several antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells in the body. Antioxidants can support immune health and reduce inflammation, while also exhibiting neuroprotective effects.

However, much of this research has been performed in test tubes and animal studies, and human data are lacking.

2. May Support Heart Health

Coriander leaves have been found to contain flavonoids, essential phytochemicals that act as antioxidants. According to one review, the flavonoids in coriander inhibit the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), leading to more relaxed arteries and, as a result, lowered blood pressure.

As promising as these results are, human research on coriander for high blood pressure (hypertension) is severely lacking. More research is needed in this area.

3. May Reduce Anxiety

Coriander is widely used in traditional medicine for anxiety. Preliminary research has shown coriander to have antianxiety effects. It may work by modulating negative emotions that arise in the brain.

Yet, human trials need to be conducted to confirm coriander's role in treating anxiety before it can be recommended.

4. May Offer Skin Protection

Lab research has revealed that coriander increases the production of procollagen type 1, a precursor to collagen, which is the most abundant protein in human skin.

In the study, coriander was also shown to thicken the dermal layer of the skin and prevent the formation of free radicals, which are often present in sun-damaged skin.

In another study, coriander essential oil showed the most potential for treating sun damage compared to other essential oils. Researchers found that coriander inhibited various enzymes that may lead to photoaging (cumulative sun damage that prematurely ages the skin).

Linalool, the primary bioactive ingredient in coriander, was believed to be the primary component responsible for these effects.

Once again, however, additional studies should be conducted before coriander can be recommended for treating sun-damaged skin.

It may work by modulating negative emotions that arise in the brain.

preliminary

preliminary表示“预备性的;初步的;开始的”,英文解释为“happening before a more important action or event”如:preliminary results / findings / enquiries 初步结果 / 发现 / 调查,举个🌰:After a few preliminary remarks he announced the winners.

2)表示“(音乐)变调”,英文解释为“to change from one musical key to another”举个🌰:Here we modulate from G major to A minor.

Yet, human trials need to be conducted to confirm coriander's role in treating anxiety before it can be recommended.

4. May Offer Skin Protection

Lab research has revealed that coriander increases the production of procollagen type 1, a precursor to collagen, which is the most abundant protein in human skin.

precursor

In another study, coriander essential oil showed the most potential for treating sun damage compared to other essential oils. Researchers found that coriander inhibited various enzymes that may lead to photoaging (cumulative sun damage that prematurely ages the skin).

essential oil

essential oil /ɪˌsen.ʃəl ˈɔɪl/ 表示“(香)精油”,英文解释为“an oil, usually with a strong smell, that is taken from a plant and is used to make perfume, or for rubbing into a person's body during massage”举个🌰:Lavender, peppermint, and jasmine are essential oils that are widely available.

Once again, however, additional studies should be conducted before coriander can be recommended for treating sun-damaged skin.

In preliminary test tube studies, a culinary spice showed promise as a remedy. Its key ingredient, an essential oil rich in phytochemicals, acted as a potent antioxidant to neutralize free radical molecules. It helped modulate immune response, reduce inflammation, and inhibit factors that thicken artery walls. As a precursor to collagen, it also boosted dermal health.
