A Japanese journalist has faced online backlash after questioning US President Donald Trump during a White House meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, prompting a controversial response referencing Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
During the meeting in Washington on Thursday, Chijiiwa Morio, a reporter for TV Asahi, asked why the United States had not informed its allies, including Japan, ahead of potential military action against Iran.
In response, Trump referenced the attack on Pearl Harbor, saying "Who knows better about surprise than Japan?" — a remark that appeared to leave Takaichi visibly uncomfortable.
Instead of criticizing Trump, some supporters of Takaichi targeted Morio with online criticism, accusing him of asking a "foolish" question that humiliated Japan.
Some users went further, calling for the broadcaster to sideline the veteran reporter, while others spread conspiracy theories, citing Morio's previous posting in China to claim — without evidence — that he was deliberately trying to embarrass Japan.
Others, however, defended the journalist, saying his question reflected legitimate concerns shared by US allies and that Trump had conflated informing allies with alerting adversaries.
International observers also said the question was reasonable, adding that the backlash highlighted a tendency to target those who raise uncomfortable issues rather than address them.
