Chinese motorcycle entrepreneur Zhang Xue has moved to clarify his viral "not a single penny" comment, explaining that he was trying to "show off a bit" after his recent win at the WSBK Portugal round rather than criticize local authorities.

In a video released on Saturday night, he said: "I meant that I had never taken any government money. I wanted to be honest, but also show off a bit — like, look, I can do something this cool all on my own."

Zhang said the government just needs to build the stage, and companies should do the rest. He chose Chongqing for its rich motorcycle resources and talent. "With such a good environment, we achieved this in just two years."

Zhang's recent success and rags-to-riches story have become a trending topic, but a clipped version of his interview had been widely circulated, leading to the misunderstandings.
