A much-circulated quote on Chinese social media — "No matter how dumb a person is, can't they still learn calculus?" — has long been attributed to Qian Xuesen, the pioneer of China's space program. However, the scientist's son, Qian Yonggang, has now publicly refuted the claim.

The younger Qian, who also serves as curator of the Qian Xuesen Library at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, stated clearly that his father never made such a remark, according to a report by Science and Technology Daily on Saturday.

He did, however, confirm another well‑known anecdote about his father: the famously difficult exams Qian Xuesen set for his students while teaching in the United States. Many of those students failed or scored abysmally low, and the feedback they received from Qian was unsparing.

Early in his career, Qian Xuesen studied under leading experts in the United States and achieved remarkable academic success.

Despite his high salary and comfortable life in the US, Qian remained concerned about his home country's development. In October 1955, Qian braved all the difficulties and finally made his way back to the Chinese mainland.

After returning to China, he was appointed leader of the country's missile and space programs and contributed extensively to China's military modernization in the 1960s and 1970s.
