Police in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, have dismantled a major criminal ring accused of producing and selling candy illegally laced with a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, local authorities reported.
The investigation, conducted by the Qinhuai district police, was triggered in early 2026 after a local resident surnamed Zhang experienced heart palpitations and excessive sweating after consuming a product called "Hammer Candy" purchased online. Zhang subsequently filed a police report.
Lab tests determined that the candy contained tadalafil, a prescription drug that is strictly prohibited in food products in China. Overdosing on tadalafil can trigger a heart attack and pose life-threatening risks, police said.
The suspects operated disguised online storefronts posing as overseas direct-purchase sellers and faked Hong Kong-based logistics tracking. The separation of payments from physical shipments added to the scheme's deceptiveness, according to investigators.
After three months of investigation spanning nine provinces and 12 cities, police carried out coordinated raids that shut down the production facility, arrested 26 suspects, and seized over 2.6 metric tons of "Hammer Candy". The case involves more than 5 million yuan in illicit transactions.
Authorities warn the public not to trust unverified internet-famous health products with exaggerated claims. Consumers should avoid supplements lacking proper qualifications, seek medical advice for health concerns, and stay away from unlabeled, unbranded, and unlicensed products.
