没写毕业论文,王浩然通过博士答辩!
China is seeing a new pathway for awarding graduate degrees, with practical achievements increasingly recognized as an alternative to traditional academic theses.
At Nanjing University, Wang Haoran recently became the first engineering doctoral student to apply for a degree based on practical achievements since China's new degree law took effect on Jan 1, 2025.
His work on fiber-optic sensing technology for water infrastructure monitoring has been deployed in major domestic projects and exported to Slovenia.
The law formally recognizes practical achievements alongside academic dissertations as a basis for degree awards. However, candidates must still undergo strict evaluations, including application reports, third-party testing and expert assessments.
"Without proven real-world applications, it is impossible," said Wang's supervisor, Professor Zhang Xuping.
Several universities, including Tsinghua University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and Sun Yat-sen University, have also seen graduates earn degrees through practical achievements.
