Authorities in Jinan, Shandong province, have detained a netizen for spreading false claims that ready-to-eat food and drinks at Sam's Club stores in Jinan and Qingdao had been partially consumed and returned to shelves.

The rumors, which circulated widely online, were accompanied by photos of an empty lime juice bottle stuffed back onto a shelf, a roast chicken reduced to a skeleton, and pastries with holes gouged out. The posts sparked public outcry and were condemned by authorities for misleading the public and severely disrupting online order.

According to the Jinan Cyber Police, an investigation revealed that on May 21, a netizen surnamed Ma fabricated the story to gain online attention and followers. Ma repackaged old, unrelated images of product tampering incidents at Sam's Club outlets in other cities, falsely presenting them as having occurred in Jinan and Qingdao. The posts were deliberately designed to stir up public concern over local supermarket food safety.

Under police questioning, Ma admitted to collecting online images, stitching them together, and publishing the false information. His actions violated Article 29 of China's Public Security Administration Punishment Law. The Cybersecurity Protection Detachment of the Jinan Municipal Public Security Bureau imposed administrative detention on Ma.

Authorities reiterated that the internet is not a lawless space, nor a stage for stunts. Fabricating and spreading false information that disrupts public order will be met with legal consequences. Police said they will continue to crack down on online rumors, clear cyberspace of chaos, and maintain a healthy, clean digital environment.

The public is urged to abide by cyber laws, adopt a responsible online mindset, refrain from creating, believing, or spreading rumors, and work together to uphold a wholesome and orderly online space.
