As China's national college entrance exam, or gaokao, got underway on Sunday, one family's pre-exam scare ended on a positive note.
On Tuesday evening, a frantic mother surnamed Wu rushed to a police station in Wuhan, Hubei province. Her son, who was preparing to take the gaokao, had accidentally left a bag containing his exam admission ticket and study notes on a shared bicycle after returning home from school. When he went back to retrieve it, both the bicycle and the bag were gone.
Police immediately launched a search. By reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing people in the area, officers determined that an elderly woman collecting recyclable materials had picked up the bag at around 7:55 pm that evening. They quickly located her and recovered the bag, with all documents and study materials intact.
The incident highlighted the importance of safeguarding essential exam documents. To assist candidates, many localities have established fast-track services for replacing lost ID cards and issuing emergency identification certificates. Students who lose important documents can seek help from local police, who are able to provide temporary identity certificates when necessary.
