"I eat Lanzhou beef noodles about five times a week," Salama says with a smile. "Every morning before going to the office, I stop for a bowl. It's simply delicious."
During his stay in South Korea, Salama closely observed China's rapid development from across the border. When considering the next step in his career, he weighed several options. "I was thinking whether to stay in Korea, go to Japan, or move to China," he recalls.
"Lanzhou reminds me of Egypt in many ways," he says. "The culture, the atmosphere and the people all feel familiar." The city's rich history and the warmth of everyday interactions quickly gave him a sense of belonging.
Every morning before 9 am, he is already in the laboratory, checking experiments and discussing progress with his students. He often reminds them that they are more than researchers. "You will be our ambassadors," he tells them. "Work hard, stay focused and make the most of your time at Lanzhou University."
"Egypt and China are among the world's oldest civilizations," Salama says. To him, China and Egypt share a deep civilizational bond.
Visiting museums, historical sites and traditional neighborhoods in China often gives him a sense of familiarity. Despite the geographical distance, he sees the two countries as sharing a common respect for history and cultural continuity.
Salama also admires China's emphasis on peaceful development. "Civilizations should coexist peacefully, and people should care for one another," he says. "The world moves forward through cooperation rather than fights and conflict."
After years of living and working in China, Salama received the country's permanent residence card, known as the "Five-Star Card".
When asked about the future, his answer is clear. "I want to stay in Lanzhou for the next 20 years." He hopes to work here until retirement.
From the Nile to the Yellow River, Salama's journey has crossed continents, cultures and civilizations.
What keeps him in China today is not only the Lanzhou beef noodles he enjoys each morning or the green tea he drinks in his office. It is also the sense of belonging he has found here, in the warmth of the city, in the friendships he has built, and in a promising future.
